He was born with colour blindness on the 6th of September in Eaglesfield, Cumberland, England to a Quaker family. John was the middle child and his family was very poor but managed to make ends meet.

He started an early education that was taught by his father then John Fletcher who was a retired teacher from Quaker school.

His early life was highly influenced by Elihu Robinson who got John interested in mathematics and science through meteorology. After that he attended Quaker school in Cumberland and started to teach there at the age of 12 years old for 2 years. At the age of 14 years old, he left the school to do farm work and soon decided to go back to teaching as assistance at another Quaker school that was in Kendal.

Then he moved to Manchester where he spent the rest of his life studying as a scientist in New College, Manchester, never got married.
