He played most of his career for the German club Hannover Cherundolo played as a defender. Before he came to Hannover , Cherundolo played from to in an American college soccer league for the University of Portland. In his first season for Hannover 96, —99, he played four matches for the team in the 2nd German league 2.

In the following season, Cherundolo was in the team most of the time, but he had a bad knee injury. He came back during the —01 season and played in 18 matches. In the following season, he played in 33 out of 34 matches. Cherundolo played his first match for the United States national team against Jamaica on 8th September From to he played 87 matches for the United States, scoring two goals.
